Why RelayDrive may trigger SmartScreen or antivirus warnings and how to safely proceed.
Windows SmartScreen & Antivirus Warnings
When you launch the RelayDrive installer or application on Windows, you might see a SmartScreen prompt that looks like this:
This warning appears because the application isn’t code-signed with a certificate issued by Microsoft. Code signing helps Microsoft determine if an app is from a known and verified source. Apps without this certificate are marked as “unrecognized,” even if they are completely safe.
Proceeding with Installation
If you downloaded RelayDrive from an official source and trust the application, you can continue installation by:
- Click More info
- Click Run anyway
This allows the app to run despite being unsigned.
Why the Warning Appears
RelayDrive is not currently signed with a Microsoft code-signing certificate. These certificates can cost over $100 per year, which isn’t feasible for this independent project. The priority is on improving core features and performance for sim racing users, rather than investing in certification.
Microsoft SmartScreen relies on a reputation system based on code signing and install history. New or unsigned apps are treated cautiously by default.
Antivirus False Positives
Some antivirus software may also flag RelayDrive as a potential threat. This is often a false positive. Because RelayDrive reads and transmits real-time simulation data, its behavior may resemble that of a tool trying to monitor or hook into processes—something antivirus programs look for.
